Book giant and now gadget maker Barnes & Noble has launched a new Video store here in the UK to complement its recently launched NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ tablets.
The company launched two new tablets last month; both of which run a highly customised version of Google’s Android platform, similar to the Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD from Amazon. Content is always being added by the company itself, and now users will be able to rent and download video content from a new Video store app.
Users will have the option to either stream directly from the store or perform a direct download to the device for watching offline, which should suit all types of situation and internet connection. Both film and TV content will be on offer, with deals already in place with studios such as BBC Worldwide, HBO, Warner Bros. Entertainment, Sony Pictures and NBCUniversal.
These studios already have their content up and ready for download in the store, and B&N promises more content is on the way from other deals it has in the works. Content will be available in both standard and high definition, the latter of which should look great in on the HD displays of both new tablets.
Perhaps the most interesting feature of the new store is UltraViolet content. This technology is pretty new in the UK – in fact, the NOOK Video store is the first to offer it here – and it offers a digital download for those who buy a movie in physical form, be it DVD or Blu-ray.
Both the NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ tablets are now on sale in the UK, starting at £159 and £229 respectively.
