An advert posted online over the weekend appears to give away EA’s plans to launch Battlefield 4 later this year, to continue the ongoing rivalry with the Call of Duty series.
The game’s presence was strangely given away by an advert for Medal of Honour: Warfighter, which is another EA game due to launch later this year. The advert appeared on EA’s Origin, which is its equivalent of Steam – a store for downloading and playing PC games. With the words “Pre-order today for exclusive Battlefield 4 Beta Access” set the gaming world ablaze with rumours and excitement, naturally.
EA took down the banner shortly after it was noticed and removed all references to Battlefield 4 on Origin. The official Battlefield Twitter account also posted “Battlefield 4? If it isn’t on battlefield.com, it isn’t official!”
Battlefield 3 feels like a game that hasn’t been out long, but in a world where Activision and Treyarch reap huge profits by launching new Call of Duty games annually, we wouldn’t be surprised if DICE and EA were already working on a fourth title in the series.
Considering that the banner was on EA’s own software, it seems that somebody jumped the gun by quite some way. Battlefield 3 is somewhere near the middle of its update schedule, with a second DLC pack – Close Quarters – only just launching, and more planned to launch throughout the rest of the year. Having said that, Battlefield fans waited nigh-on 5 years between the second and third titles, so perhaps we’ve got even more time to wait for a fourth title.
Are you eager to get to grips with Battlefield 4, or do you think EA and DICE should wait it out and not launch titles annually to rival CoD?
