The days of missing a show on TV and having to wait for it to hit iPlayer may well be over, thanks to a nifty new feature the Beeb is calling ‘Live Restart’.

iPlayer offers both catch-up and live TV shows via the website and on various apps, and now users will have the ability to rewind live TV by up to 2 hours, perfect for getting back to the start of a show that’s half-way through or one that’s recently finished.

The feature is available right now via the desktop site, but we’ll need to wait a while before it comes to smartphones and tablets unfortunately. We can see Live Restart becoming very popular, and plans have already been outlined for it to come to smartphones, tablets and Smart TVs later in the year.

The BBC’s clever service started off life as a place to catch up on missed TV shows, but now it says that 22% of requests on the desktop site this April were for live TV.

Dave Price, Head of BBC iPlayer said: “We all know how frustrating it is when you’re stuck in a traffic jam, or delayed on the tube, missing the critical start of your favourite BBC programme. Live Restart solves this… With one simple click of a button viewers can skip back to the beginning of a live programme.”

The new feature joins several others that were recently introduced, including an option for high quality streaming, HD content and the addition of Match of the Day as of next season.
