BBC Broadcasters to get custom iPhone app for Live Reporting

  • by

BBC reporters are soon to get a custom iPhone app which will allow them to record live video, audio and still imaging and import it directly into the TV network.

Journalism.co.uk reports that the Beeb are well underway with development of a custom app to be used on iPhone and iPad by its reporters, and that it could well be released by the end of this month.

Reporters will be able to record video using their iPhone or iPad and broadcast it to the network using either a 3G or Wi-Fi signal. We’re assuming this application is more suited to on-the-fly reporting, unless they are planning to have smaller film crews on the scene.

Martin Turner, head of operations for newsgathering said: Martin Turner, head of operations for newsgathering, said:

“Reporters have been using smart phones for a while now but it was never good quality. You might do it when there was a really important story.

“Now it is beginning to be a realistic possibility to use iPhones and other devices for live reporting, and in the end if you’ve got someone on the scene then you want to be able to use them.”

The BBC are hoping that with the help of their new app, reporters can broadcast a story quickly and efficiently, saving the time usually needed to set up a full filming and broadcasting crew.

Martin also goes on to add: “Smart phones and portable devices are a crucial part of that, but we are not wedded to the iPhone by any means, it is just one option. We are using it at the moment because it offers us the best combination of features, but it is not the only solution.”

We’re wondering how exactly a reporter would hold an iPad at arm’s length to record themselves reporting, it could get a bit tricky.
