Blackberry Media Box under development to rival Apple TV?

This week we’ve heard a lot of rumours heating up surrounding a new product from Blackberry makers RIM. We’re talking something completely different to a tablet or smartphone – a Blackberry TV device for media streaming, like Apple TV.

Blackberry news site N4BB recently reported that RIM was developing something new and interesting, a ‘Blackberry Media Box’. Their source previously broke news of a “Blackberry Blackpad” which turned out to be the Playbook, so we have good reason to sit up and listen to this rumour!

Nerdberry.net then took the rumour a step further and confirmed that this mystery device has the codename “Blackberry Cyclone”. Like Apple TV, this device will connect to your HDTV via a HDMI output, and also connect to Wi-Fi to gain access to web-based video content.

We’re told that Netflix movie streaming will be on board (though we’re guessing it won’t be involved for UK devices) as well as YouTube and DLNA sharing with other devices connected to the same network. Blackberry’s new QNX software is said to be what’s running the media box, though we’re currently unsure as to whether RIM’s Blackberry Messenger and Email clients will make an appearance.

Said to be launching before the end of year, the Blackberry Cyclone is an interesting prospect. What do you think about the prospect of a Blackberry Media Streamer for your living room? Let us know what you think via our Official Twitter Page
