BlackBerry Messenger 7 with Wi-Fi calling now available to all from App World

  • by

Research in Motion’s potential Skype killer for BlackBerry is now out and available to download in full. We’re talking about BBM 7, the latest update to the incredibly popular instant messaging platform.

A short while ago we learnt that RIM had plans to introduce free voice calling into BBM in version 7, and the company put it out via the Beta Zone for eager ‘Berry users to test out. It seems tests have gone swimmingly, as the app update is now available through the BlackBerry App World.

Asides from voice calling, BBM 7 contains a host of tweaks and new additions that overall make it a worthwhile download for those who use the platform for chatting and sending files with other BlackBerry users. As mentioned, voice calls can now be made for free from within BBM via a Wi-Fi connection, with statuses updating to show which of your BBM contacts are on calls and such. This is bound to be a smash hit for those who like to keep in touch with others in faraway lands, doing away with the hefty phone charges.

Multitasking is included in the update to a certain degree, meaning that you’ll be able to chat to others, check your emails and even open other apps while you’re engaged in a BBM voice call. You’ll also be able to send files to a contact while speaking with them on a voice call, as both functions go through the phone’s data connection.

Other features include 16 new emoticons for those who like to express themselves using smilies, updates to the BBM app from directly within the app instead of via the App World, and easy synchronisation of your BBM Contacts and Groups with your BlackBerry ID, meaning that you can switch to a new BlackBerry device – hint, BlackBerry 10 – with ease.

If you love the sound of free voice calls with BBM, hit up the BlackBerry App World now to find the update and install.
