Activision’s latest installment of their multi-awarding winning Call of Duty franchise, Modern Warfare 3, has been leaked online after a copy was stolen from a shipping warehouse.
The game goes on sale next week and is the third installment of the Modern Warfare version in the franchise, and is expected to shift 16 million copies before the end of the year.
Apparently the copy was pinched from a shipping warehouse in Fresco, California, and since has appeared on shady torrent sites over the weekend.
Only one of the two CD’s has made its way into pirates’ hands – so the campaign portion of the game hasn’t been leaked.
The leak follows an earlier leak this year which outed the game’s entire achievement list and campaign plot.
Call Of Duty is going to face-off against EA/DICE’s Battlefield 3, which saw its launch last week and according to early sales figures from EA, it has shifted an impressive 5.6 million copies in just one day.
“From Tokyo to Los Angeles, Sydney to London, millions of fans have been playing all weekend long — we are overwhelmed by the global response to Battlefield 3,” said Patrick Soderlund, EVP of the EA.
“It is extremely gratifying to deliver an entertainment experience that delights our fans, and to have the opportunity to introduce new people to the franchise. Already, we are seeing unprecedented play times and online activity which is very rewarding. This launch solidifies Battlefield as a leading entertainment brand,” he said.
From the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 pre-orders figures it looks like Modern Warfare 3 will be likely to sell double the amount of copies of BF3 – but with every version of the Battlefield franchise they’re closing the gap to Modern Warfare and Activision’s shooter crown
