It’s only taken a day, but Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is already breaking sales records, not just for the game series itself but for the gaming industry.
One of the three developers behind the game, Activision, has spoken about the game’s early success.
Speaking at an earnings call last night, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg said “The record number of pre-orders from Modern Warfare 3 drove the largest day-one shipments in our history, and in the industry’s history,”
We already knew that pre-order numbers for the latest shoot-em-up had exceeded those from last year’s Black Ops title, though some of the numbers Activision has published for this year’s release are quite astounding.
The game officially launched yesterday, though over 500 Game and Gamestation stores opened at midnight in the UK on Monday to sell the game early. More than 1.5 million eager gamers queued up at midnight across the world at over 13,000 stores, including those Game stores in the UK.
Along with the new game, its developers also launched a new online social site for gamers to share their stats, scores, replays and more. Call of Duty: Elite has received “an incredible response” according to Activision, and one that exceeded their “optimistic expectations”. However, there were some technical hitches with the service experienced by many games in the early hours of Tuesday morning, with some gamers left unable to access the site. These issues have since been rectified, with over 1 million signups recorded so far.
