Cheerleaders, Chainsaws, Zombies! Warner Bros picks up publishing on “Lollipop Chainsaw”

A Cheerleader. A Chainsaw. And a whole bunch of zombies..

Sold? – We thought so!

Warner Bros have decided to take promising gaming title Lollipop Chainsaw out of Japan and deliver it to western audiences, becoming the publisher for the third-person horror/comedy title which features a Buffy-esque starlet by the name of Juliet Starling, a pom-pom pusher from San Romero High School (get the reference?) who doubles as a slayer of the undead!

In Lollipop Chainsaw for each major achievement in the gameplay, you’ll get an upgrade to your weapon, meaning more gruesome dispatching of the walking dead – Just what we like!

The game will be written by James Gunn. It’s not a major name most mainstream cinema-goers will have heard of, but he was the screen writer for the 2002 live-action/animated Scooby Doo movie and has worked with schlock-horror studio Troma. The latter in particular proving Gunn has got the background, guts and grotesque humour to make a title like Lollipop Chainsaw really live up to its hype.

Lollipop Chainsaw was announced back in July after being teased in Japan almost a year ago – but it was lacking a western publisher. Warner has now picked up the lucrative title, developed by Japanese co. Grasshopper Manufacture and to be published by Kadokawa Games in its native land.

There’s an obvious appeal to a character who’s a cheerleader with a chainsaw and we think this game has the potential to get the blood pumping (and flowing) making Lollipop Chainsaw a female-fronted-franchise as popular as the Tomb Raider games.

Time to pass over your crown, Miss Croft!

The game is set for release sometime in 2012 for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 consoles.
