It’s looking like 2013 could be the long-awaited year of the next generation console, as rumours are circulating regarding what Sony is planning to announce after it started to send out invites to a “Destination PlayStation” event in February.
Sony has announced that between February 25 -28 it will be showing off its upcoming releases for 2013. However, the big rumour surrounding this one-off event is that Sony may take to the stage and announce its next generation PlayStation 4 console to the masses in an attempt to undercut the supposed Xbox 720 that is rumoured to be announced in June.
The event is taking place in Scottsdale, Arizona and is attended mainly by industry press and retailers where they can see what is coming in the way of games, consoles, accessories and more when it comes to PlayStation and PlayStation Portable.
However, what this simply could be is a showcase for the console that has arguably hit its stride in the past year. Unlike the Xbox 360, the PS3 seemingly still has a few more years left in it as its Blu-ray drive and recent updates to the size and shape have kept the PS3 more relevant than Microsoft’s Xbox 360 for some.
The life of the two consoles is still separated by roughly a year from when they were both released – The Xbox 360 launched in November 2005 and the Ps3 launched a year later in November 2006 in Japan.
Last week Microsoft’s Major Nelson started a countdown to E3 on his famous blog, which sparked rumours that Microsoft would be bringing a new console to the biggest gaming show in the world in June, E3.
Nintendo has already released its next-gen console in the form of the Wii U and later in the year a new breed of gaming console will launch in the form of the OUYA which runs on Android, so it is possible that Microsoft and Sony could be stepping things up a bit with their console preparations.
