Facebook App Centre Launches in the UK, Aiming to Rival App Store and Play Store

Mark Zuckerberg and Co. want to take on Apple and Google’s App Store and Play Store with something of their own, and today the Facebook App Centre has launched in the UK.

Users of the social network will find an option for App Centre on the left side of their page, aptly placed underneath the ‘Apps’ header. Head on in to the centre and you’ll find a pretty extensive collection of apps, tailored for both the web browser and mobile devices.

Apps can be filtered specifically by Web or Mobile, or you can view them all together. Facebook offers apps by category – Games, Entertainment, Facebook, Lifestyle, Music, News, Photos and Video, Sports, Travel & Local, and Utilities – and it also offers Timeline apps for your profile page. These include TripAdvisor, Spotify, Pinterest and more, and fit in neatly with the Timeline design to show things you’ve read, places you’ve been, music you’ve listened to, and so on.

From what we’ve seen already, the App Centre is pretty neat, giving you images and plenty of information when you select an app to check out, and also showing you if any of your friends are already using it.

In typical Facebook fashion, the most popular apps are listed; as are the apps you might love. Each app can be added to your apps list on the Facebook site, or you can send it to your mobile for installing a smartphone app instead.

Big deals with some of the most popular apps have been made, meaning that the likes of Deezer, Shazam, and Angry Birds are ready and waiting to be downloaded, and Facebook hopes to attract developers to add more apps. The site will offer developers 70% of the profits made from any downloads, keeping a healthy 30% for itself as the host.
