With the announcement of a new piece of software comes a lot of digging around by software developers and general geeks, and the new Facebook Video Calling with Skype is no different.
One clever chap has seemingly unearthed evidence of a new Facebook service called “Vibes” within the source code of the new Video Calling feature. We could take a wild stab in the dark at what Vibes is, but we’re almost certain the name points towards a music service of some sort. We already know that Facebook has been in talks with Spotify to provide a music streaming service, so could Vibes be the result of that partnership?
Software expert Jeff Rose was picking through the source code of Facebook Video Calling recently, mainly just to figure out how Facebook made it and how it works. What he didn’t bargain for, however, was finding a line of code that gives the installer two permissions: one is to use “peep” which is the Video Calling service, and one to use “vibes”. Peep, or Video Calling, has already been announced and nigh on everybody now knows about it, but what about vibes?
We suspect that Vibes will turn out to be the development name for the software, as Facebook has a habit of giving their features a rather simple moniker when they go live – Facebook Chat, Facebook Video Calling and Facebook Games, for example.
We’re hedging our bets on seeing another super awesome Facebook event invite appearing in the next couple of months, and that will be our ticket to see the official unveiling of Vibes.
