EA Sports’ annual FIFA iteration has exceeded all expectations this year, selling over 1 million copies in its opening weekend to shoot to the top of the UK games charts.
FIFA 13 went on sale at midnight last Thursday in many stores around the country to accommodate for the intense popularity and anticipation behind the title, along with pre-orders which have been taken for the past few months.
The result is over 1 million copies sold in its first week – technically just three days – on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS. Only three games have made 1 million game sales in their first week, all of them being from the Call of Duty series – Black Ops along with Modern Warfare 2 and 3.
EA’s new title has knocked recent shooter Borderlands 2 from the top spot with relative ease, also beating out World of Warcraft expansion Mists of Pandaria and Ubisoft’s new guitar teacher Rocksmith.
FIFA 13 is said to have accounted for a whopping 196 per cent rise in video game sales in the last week alone, with a huge 71 per cent of all games sold being EA’s new footy title. A staggering 80 per cent of all revenue generated from video game sales in the past week comes from FIFA 13 sales.
EA’s long standing rival, Pro Evolution Soccer, currently sits in 5th place in the UK games charts with its 2013 title, PES 2013.
FIFA 13 is also out on iOS for those with an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Check out what we thought of the game after a first play here.
