Giant Nokia Lumia 1520 (Bandit) set for October 22nd official debut

Nokia’s giant Windows Phone looks set to make an autumnal debut, with the Finnish company today sending out invites to what looks to be a big media event on October 22nd.

The invite itself gives very little away, with the hashtags ‘#blazing’, ‘stories’ and ‘#innovationreinvented’ laid over a picture of two people skiing on sand dunes. Nokia also tells us to save the date: October 22nd.

So what could be planned for the event? Well, the two devices rumoured to be in the works at Nokia are the 6-inch Lumia 1520 phone (previously known as the Bandit) and the company’s first tablet, which will run Windows. Any detective work from there is made easy by the notorious Twitter tipster @Evleaks who recently tweeted: “According to several sources, Bandit launch was pushed back. Could be 10/22

So there we have it; the tipster that’s rarely wrong has a launch date for the Lumia 1520 which matches up with Nokia’s invite. There could also be a Windows tablet in store, but we’re willing to bet that the event will be solely for a new phone which will become Nokia’s biggest smartphone by a long way. Nokia will want to launch its first ever tablet with a bang, so we would imagine it’ll get its very own event.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 will usher in a new Windows Phone update which we currently know as GDR3, which will bring compatibility for larger Full HD displays and other features which will help bring Windows Phone level with Android, at least in terms of hardware. The display on the 1520 will be a huge 6-inch Full HD one, rocking a sharp 1920 x 1080 resolution.

The phone will be Nokia’s first attempt at a ‘phablet’ – an oversized phone-cum-tablet format which was coined by Samsung and its popular Galaxy Note. It’ll be the first of its kind in the Windows Phone roster and we can expect more of the same from other manufacturers as Microsoft reveals the GDR3 update alongside it.

Stay tuned next month for the full low-down on Nokia’s beast in hiding.
