Google has announced that phone calling within Gmail will be making its way over the pond to the UK as well as 37 other countries, as part of a massive rollout taking place over the next few days
The service was launched in the U.S last August, offering cheap internet-to-mobile and internet-to-landline calls via the internet. Thankfully for us Brits, Google has decided to bring the service across the Atlantic and give us a rival to Skype’s VoIP program.
Calls to UK mobile phones from Gmail will cost just 7p per minute – that’s less than half the price charged by rival Skype. You’ll be able to make calls to over 150 destinations using the green telephone icon which will appear at the top of your Gmail Chat list in the next few days.
Google famously offered free Gmail to landline calls in the U.S and Canada, but there’s currently no word on whether such a service will come to the UK or any other countries – It would be great though, wouldn’t it?
Over the next couple of days Google will be updating Gmail accounts in the 38 new countries set to receive the service, making a little green telephone icon appear to indicate that Gmail calling is now available.
