The browser that appears out of the box on Android tablets and smartphones does the job, but it’s very faceless and no-frills. Even to the point where it’s simply called ‘browser’. If you think it’s odd that Google hasn’t rolled out its ace – Chrome – onto the mobile wonders, you’re not alone…
As it turns out, we could be very close to seeing the stock Android browser replaced by a version of Chrome. The Android browser and Chrome share a lot of similar coding, according to the big G, but the reason they’ve not converged before is that while Chrome is built using the Chronium software, the Android browser is built by WebKit.
The two have been at odds, but now Google has built a bridge that should allow Chrome to drop onto Android devices in time for the next iteration of the OS – Ice Cream Sandwich.
Google’s thrown a lot of time and money into making Chrome a success and into gaining popularity, so it makes perfect sense for it to appear across all of Google’s products. Will Chrome on Android improve the experience? Let us know on the Gadget Helpline Twitter feed.
