Google to kill off Nexus brand for tablets and smartphones?

What exactly is a Nexus… Well if the rumours are true, then after 2015 a Nexus will not be a branded Google product if serial tipster and general tech head Eldar Murtazin is to be believed.

Nexus line by Google is over in 2015 😉 Yes – this line will be replaced by Play Edition (current name, it will be rebranded)” – he tweeted. The tipster has previously provided information on a range of up and coming products varying from Nokia Lumia to Samsung Galaxy S phones.

Whilst it’s not something that can be verified – Google has said: “We don’t comment on rumour or speculation” – it is something that seems well in line with Google’s recent brandings. The company has recently offered its own versions of top-end phones with a pure Android operating system – including the HTC One and Galaxy S4 – which it has called ‘Google Play editions’.

So we can expect to see no more Google Nexus devices from 2015 and we would then start to see Google Play edition smartphones and tablets instead. Whether this signals the end of unique Nexus devices in favour of ‘Google Play’ versions of smartphones from other manufacturers remains to be seen.

Several suspected reasons for this have been put forward including suspicion that other manufacturers are reluctant to provide Google Play editions of their handsets whilst there is a Nexus brand that offers similar functionality. On the other hand, with Google using its own branded Motorola handsets more and more the Nexus line could soon be defunct.

However, what we know is that whilst the Nexus brand is cherished by tech heads it is still wildly unknown by the general public, and when faced with brand names such as Samsung Galaxy and Nokia Lumia, the Nexus brand is virtually unknown.

However, it’s all just rumour and hearsay at the moment so everything could be taken with a  pinch of salt. Eldar Murtazin however is normally a reliable source, so check out his Twitter to keep updated.
