Google Lets You Blacklist Websites From Your Searches

  • by

Google seems to be in the mood to bring about heavy duty changes in its search mechanism. Recently, Google did some behind-the-

scenes tweaking of its algorithms and demoted the sites with ostensibly superfluous content.

The efficacy of the step has been widely questioned as there seems to be a large number of legitimate sites which have taken a big hit from this step. But the company’s latest feature seems to be more democratic in nature. Instead of acting like a big brother and deciding which site you should or should not visit, the search company has put a little more power at the end users’ disposal.

Under the latest offering, Google now lets you block off websites from your search results. This way, you can weed out the websites which you decide do not cater to your needs. The feature, which should be available to you pretty soon, works on a simple phenomenon. Once you visit a website through Google search results and then come back to Google, you will get the option to block that domain, if you wish to.

Google assures you that once you follow this procedure, you would not see the offending website in your results again. In your future searches, it will also inform you if there are any results from any blocked sites, although it will not show the site itself. The good thing is that blocking a website is not a one way road. If you change your mind about a website, then you can always unblock it by visiting the ‘settings’ tab. The new feature is currently available for Google.com and you may try it if you are using IE 8, Firefox 3.5+ or Chrome 9+. Google will be expanding the feature shortly.
