Google has launched an Apple Siri competitor in the form of the Google Voice Search app for the iOS market and Apple devices.
Google Voice Search is a similar tool to Siri, where a user can interact with the handset via voice commands and questions. You can ask Google Voice about the weather in specific areas, what movies are on nearby and even directions to your nearest landmarks and attractions.
The system works very similarly to Siri in that you ask a question of the app and then the Google search features will return an answer to you in both audio form and links and information onscreen.
The app is already available on Android devices and is great to use but the inclusion of the app on Apple’s iOS devices and App Store will offer Apple fans some alternatives to Siri. Of course, the app cannot interact with the native iOS apps like Siri can, so you won’t be able to use it to send you a text or set an alarm.
Google has also started a limited trial of its search features, where users with a Gmail account will be able to integrate the Gmail inbox into their search results, so if any previous information has been shared via email they will also be able to get that up in the general search engine.
An example of this would be searching for train times on a specific date and Google search will also pull up your events for that day. If you would like to trial this service yourself you can register here for the Google Experimental service and trial the new search service.
