HP to produce more TouchPad tablets to meet demand

I’m sure you’ll all be aware that HP decided to kill off the TouchPad just a mere 49 days after it’s official release in July and then plummeted the price right down to $99 in the US for the 16GB version and £89 in the UK.

Well, since the price drop demand has gone through the roof, which has certainly taken HP by surprise and now the tech giant has decided to produce one last run of the TouchPad tablets which hopefully will be sold for the same reduced price, although HP have not confirmed this.

In fact, according to teardown website iSupply, they speculate that in terms of components alone, a 16GB TouchPad would cost HP $300 to build. So, if HP do decide to sell the latest run of TouchPads at the same reduced price, it’s obviously going to be another loss making exercise, but for the consumer it’s certainly good news and gives thousands of people another chance to get their hands on the much sought after device.

HP spokesman Mark Budgell said in a company blog that “Despite announcing an end to manufacturing webOS hardware, we have decided to produce one last run of TouchPads to meet unfulfilled demand. As we know more about how, when and where TouchPads will be available, we will communicate that here and through e-mail to those who requested notification.”

As of today, the HP TouchPad is the second best-selling tablet on the market, after the iPad.
