A Taiwanese industry paper is reporting that HTC is preparing to have a big 2013 by attempting to take on both Apple and Samsung in the smartphone world by producing a super smart phone which will blow both the iPhone 5 and Galaxy SIII out of the water.
The phone is currently known as the HTC ‘M7’ and Focus Taiwan is reporting that HTC has briefed its suppliers of casings and semiconductors to prepare components for 4 to 5 million M7 phones.
This would be an area-leading smartphone if it was to sell anywhere near this number and would have to be a big name and specced phone to take on the likes of the Android-running Galaxy S3, iOS 6-sporting iPhone 5 and to some extent the Windows Phone 8-running Lumia 920, who are all leaders in their respective OS field.
HTC has had a less than great year for smartphones in 2012, despite its range of Android One handsets (HTC One X, S and V) all receiving great reviews, and the HTC 8X Windows Phone 8 alternative also doing well in the early stages, but none of these phones ever led the way.
There is no information on exactly what the HTC M7 will have specs-wise but if its an Android phone it would have to have at least Android Jelly Bean 4.2.1 installed with a quad-core processor clocked at over 1.5Ghz, and with a fair bit of RAM to even compete with the pack.
The handset would also need to be 4G compatible to compete in 2013 where the service (especially in the UK) will be an essential part of any smartphone purchase.
We have a real soft spot for HTC ever since they shocked us all with the beautiful and pioneering HTC Desire smartphone back in February 2010, which led the way for the modern stylish smartphone.
We would expect to hear more at January’s CES show in Las Vegas if HTC are to take 2013 by storm.
