HTC recently started locking the Bootloaders on their handsets; this was to stop the booting of custom recoveries used for loading custom softwares.
This did not go down too well in certain circles of the Android community, and for example the very clever developers over at XDA-Developers started working on cracking these bootloaders, allowing access to the internal NAND memory of some of the newer HTC handsets, bringing the custom software goodness to the users of these powerful Smartphones.
But thanks to lots of constructive feedback from the Android developer community – the ones that use HTC handsets at least, HTC have released a statement on Facebook and Twitter stating they are reviewing their Bootloader policies.
HTC on Facebook:
“Thanks so much for providing feedback, we hear your concerns. Your satisfaction is a top priority for us and we’re working hard to ensure you have great experiences with our phones. We’re reviewing the issue and our policy around Bootloaders and will provide more information soon. Thank you for your interest, support and willingness to share your feedback.”
HTC followed up on Twitter as well:
“Thanks for the feedback, we’re listening! We’re reviewing our Bootloader policy.”
This is not a change that will happen overnight but what it means is that HTC have listened to their customers and although there is no way of knowing what their decision will be, there is at least a discussion to be had.
