The long awaited Ice Cream Sandwich update is now finally rolling out to owners of the Archos G9 series of tablets, Gadget Helpline can confirm.
Archos’ latest G9 tablets – of which there are two models, the 80 and the 101 – will get the coveted update to Android 4.0 over the coming days and weeks, as the update process has only just started.
The road to the update’s release has been a bumpy one, with Archos fans left wondering if they’re ever going to get the update. Archos initially said the update would land in February, and come the 23rd of last month we were advised by our contact at Archos that the update would land within the week, before the end of February. That time has passed, and two weeks on we now know that the update is on its way.
Our contact at Archos has just dropped us a mail to let us know that the update is now available for all. Your tablet will automatically show an ‘A’ logo in the bottom right corner to indicate the update’s availability, simply tap it and follow the instructions to install. You’ll need to ensure your device is well charged (at least 50%) and connected to a Wi-Fi network.
If you don’t want to wait for the update to find you, then follow the process below to force your device to contact the update server and find the update.
Settings > About Device > Firmware Update
If, as our Archos 80 G9 did, your tablet brings back the message ‘your device is up to date’, fear not, as there is a plan C in place. Head over to www.archos.com/support and click the downloads tab. Click Firmware, choose the Archos 80/101 G9 from the drop-down list and then click on Download Archos 80/101 G9 OS v 4.0.4.
Once the file is downloaded, connect your Archos tablet to your PC using a USB cable, copy and paste the firmware update file onto your tablet, disconnect the tablet from the USB cable and allow the update to be found and installed. Voila, enjoy your slice of Ice Cream Sandwich!
