Apple’s latest beta software for the forthcoming iOS 5 contains more than just custom notification tones, as we’ve just found out.
Within the Accessibility menu is an option for ‘Custom Vibrations’ which, when turned on results in another option appearing in the Sound Settings menu. Right down at the bottom is an option for “Vibration Patterns”.
Tap that to turn it on and you’ll find a new submenu dedicated to customising vibration patterns within Settings > Sounds. You’ve got 5 default options of Alert, Heartbeat, Rapid, S.O.S and Symphony. Even more interestingly, down at the bottom of the page you have the option to Create New Vibration.
Tap this option and you’ll see the same screen as top right on this page. You get an area of the screen to tap, hold or prod as you like to create a custom vibration tone. Tap record at the bottom and do your tap above for as long or short, or as many times as you like within the space of ten seconds. This custom vibration pattern can then be assigned to your notifications and for individual contacts. It’s not a massive feature but a pretty neat one and something that we’ve not seen on another smartphone OS.
