Despite being a good 0.8mm thinner, the Samsung Galaxy S II has lost its ‘World’s Thinnest Smartphone’ title to the iPhone 4, due to a ruling by the UK Advertising Standards Agency.
When the iPhone 4 came out it was the thinnest smartphone at just 9.3mm thick. Then the Samsung Galaxy S II came out, touting an iPhone-beating 8.5mm thickness. The world recognised the Galaxy S II as the new world’s thinnest.
However, the UK’s Advertising Standards Agency has ruled that Samsung were not measuring the Galaxy S II from its thickest point – which by our account should be the thicker ‘bump’ at the base of the phone. The ASA agree, and have confirmed that when thickness is measured to account for the bump, the Galaxy S II is actually 9.91mm thick.
The ruling makes the Galaxy S II 0.61mm thicker than the iPhone 4, thus handing the ‘World’s Slimmest Smartphone’ title back over to Cupertino company Apple.
What with the tirade of legal battles going on between Apple and Samsung recently we wouldn’t be surprised if Apple had requested this check to be carried out by the Advertising Standards Agency.
In fact, the company have even been quoted as saying “consumers would not be interested in the thinnest part of the device, but in its overall measurements, as these would, for example, affect whether the device could fit into a pocket or a purse.”
Oh Apple. When will you stop suing Samsung and leave them be!
