It took just a few hours for one hacker to jailbreak his new iPhone 5 over the weekend, but unfortunately the method isn’t yet available to use for everyone.
Renowned hacker and security expert ‘chpwn’, or Grant Paul as he’s known in the real world, proudly posted a picture of his new iPhone 5 running Cydia, which is the equivalent of the App Store for hacked iOS devices.
Despite the iPhone 5 running a larger screen with a whole new aspect ratio, Cydia seems to work nicely and fits the screen fully with no black bars at the top or bottom. The internet dissected Paul’s work and claimed it fake, and in response he posted a screenshot of Cydia running on the phone along with a picture of the phone running the app.
A jailbreak for the recently-released iOS 6 software was recently revealed, although it only worked on older Apple products. The iPhone 5 uses a completely new A6 processor, which would usually make for lots of hard work and testing for developers in order to come up with a Jailbreak. We suspect that Paul has come across a handy loophole which has enabled him to load Cydia onto the phone, and as the story usually goes, it’s likely to be a tethered jailbreak.
If one hacker has managed to break free of Apple’s grip on the iPhone 5 already, we envision a publicly available jailbreak – tethered followed by untethered – to come out in the next few weeks.
The process of jailbreaking an iOS device provides access to apps, themes, software tweaks and extras that Apple wouldn’t want you to use. While it provides a way to escape Apple’s walled garden, it does invalidate your device’s warranty, so be warned.
