Wireless charging has been around for some time now, but it’s still not as readily available or widely compatible as we’d like. LG hopes to change that with the WCP-300; the world’s smallest wireless charger.
The dinky charging pad isn’t yet another attempt to provide an exclusive and proprietary wireless charging system for its own phones, thankfully. LG has adopted the Qi standard for wireless charging, which makes the new accessory compatible with a wide range of handsets from different manufacturers.
A simple micro USB connection to a mains plug provides the charging pad with the power it needs, which is then transferred wirelessly to a compatible phone or tablet’s battery through conduction.
Thanks to Qi certification from the Wireless Power Consortium, the WCP-300 should work with almost any phone or tablet that has Qi wireless charging built in. That includes the Nexus 4 and Nokia Lumia 920, as well as various others.
If you’re wondering just how small the world’s smallest wireless charger is, LG says it’s no bigger than the size of a regular cup coaster.
The charger is set to cost around $60 and will gradually roll out to markets around the world over the next few months. It’s also the first step in LG’s plans to put wireless charging into its new phones.
