We’re talking LG Nexus 5 here, which looks set to be a November launch. The new model was first spotted in the hands of a Google employee at the Android KitKat statue unveiling, then we’ve since spotted several pretty neat-looking 3D renders based on the phone in that fateful picture. Now, the real deal has been pictured whilst going through tests at the FCC.
The design matches the phone held by the Google employee and the subsequent 3D renders, which show a matte black plastic back cover and a contrasting glossy black glass-covered front. The back panel is a stark contrast from the sparkly glass which featured on the Nexus 4, although many believe that the phone pictured is in a dummy or prototype casing to hide the final design.
We know the phone model as the LG D820 and despite the omission of any Nexus branding, it’s definitely set to be the fifth phone in Google’s Nexus range. These devices differ from the Samsungs, Sonys and HTCs of this world in that they run stock Android – Google’s mobile operating system in its purest form, without any third party apps, themes, skins or widgets. These devices tend to appeal to the real Android fanatics, which is in part due to the ease of changing the software and loading custom ROMs.
So far the rumours surrounding the Nexus 5 have been based on the Nexus 4 and logical upgrades from that. A 5-inch Full HD display is now almost a given as this seems to be the current trend for high-end Android smartphones, whilst a newer Qualcomm chip will be put in the place of the Nvidia Tegra 3 – we’re expecting either the Snapdragon 600 or 800, bundled with 2GB of RAM.
Finally, it’s highly likely that the phone will come running Google’s current and tastiest flavour of Android, version 4.3 Jelly Bean.
