If the Galaxy SIII isn’t for you but Android certainly is, you might want to take a look at LG’s latest offering, which launches in the UK today: The Optimus L7.

Earlier in the year the Korean tech giant revealed a family of three new Android smartphones to suit everyone: the Optimus L3, Optimus L5 and the Optimus L7. LG hopes the budget Optimus L3 will appeal to those on pay as you go who don’t want to shell out mega-bucks for a phone. On the other hand, the Optimus L7 is a well-priced smartphone with some great features.

For starters it runs the latest version of Android – 4.0 aka Ice Cream Sandwich. It’s a slim and sleek handset too, with a glossy finish on the front and a silver bezel running around the side of the phone. The front face hosts a decent 4.3-inch screen with an 800 x 480 resolution and a pixel density of 217 pixels per inch. A sheet of Gorilla Glass covers the screen to protect it from scratches and other damage too.

Inside you have 4GB of internal storage which can be expanded by up to 32GB using a microSD card, along with Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi Hotspot, 3G and Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity. The L7 also packs a HDMI out port for connecting to your HDTV, and a Micro USB port for charging and synchronisation.

A 1GHz Cortex-A5 powers the phone along with 512MB of RAM and an Adreno 200 graphics processing unit – a trio which is not at the dizzying heights of the latest flagship smartphones, but will provide a nippy experience and decent performance when playing games and the like.

On the back of the phone there is a 5-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, capable of recording video in Full HD 1080p quality, while a VGA front-facing camera takes care of video calling.

The LG Optimus L7 will be available in both black and white, with the latter available as of today from UK retailer Phones 4u. A very reasonable £299 is the asking price for the phone on pay as you go.
