LG Announces Optimus UI 3.0 for Top Android Smartphones

[tab name=’News’]

LG is a manufacturer that generally doesn’t go with the norm of naming its software products and making a big deal out of them, but with the rise of rivals Samsung and HTC’s TouchWiz and Sense interfaces for Android, things are about to change.

The Korean manufacturer has announced a new user interface that will take precedence on its new Android smartphones, presumably in a hope it can differentiate from its rivals.

Dubbed ‘Optimus UI 3.0’, the custom interface will appear on the Optimus 4X HD flagship smartphone when it launches in the UK next month.

It’s a gesture-based affair, with both touch and voice being able to control various aspects of the phone. For example, when unlocking the phone, the user can swipe anywhere on the screen to unlock. Custom patterns can be stored for accessing specific applications; so for example drawing an ‘f’ on the screen, your LG phone will unlock and launch into the Facebook application.

This feature sounds promising, offering a different take on the unlock-to-app feature present in HTC Sense. It sounds similar to the gesture bookmarks system found in the Dolphin HD browser for Android, should anyone have come across that.

Additionally, LG has implemented voice control into Optimus UI 3.0. One cool way of using this new tech is called “Voice Shutter”, whereby you can tell the phone to take images simply using your voice. Samsung has also created a very similar feature within the new version of TouchWiz for the Galaxy S3.

Another feature called “Quick Memo” allows the user to scrawl down a note or message on the screen using a finger or stylus, before then putting your text into a message, email or onto a social app.

We’ll be getting some hands-on time with LG’s new Optimus UI 3.0 next month when the Optimus 4X HD lands in the UK. In the meantime, what do you think of the features?
