Microsoft says no go to Mango on slates

Speaking at the Worldwide Partners Conference on Tuesday, President of the Microsoft Phone Division, Andy Lees has advised tablet owners not to get too behind the idea of a WP7 Mango update for what CEO Steve Ballmer refers to as the “tablets and slates”.

Tablets are still too close to PCs for the Windows Phone 7 operating system and its anticipated update to be including on tablets. This will not be the direction Microsoft is taking. Windows 8 will be the one and only option for a Microsoft platform on the handheld computer and Lees says WP7 doesn’t fit in with plans.

After Big Ballms confessed Windows Phone 7 has not been entirely the success Microsoft envisioned it makes sense the company wouldn’t place all its money on trying to translate the platform onto tablet. Challenging the incompatibility issues just wouldn’t be beneficial when Windows 8 is being specifically developed to be tablet-friendly.

The WP7’s fortunes may change with the reveal of several new handsets including the rumoured Samsung gadget which mirrors the Galaxy S II – designed for the Microsoft OS.

But that’s the end of the speculation for tablet fans – and sadly it’s a no-go to Mango.
