Microsoft starting Spring Xbox Dashboard updates today

Microsoft has announced its spring update for the Xbox 360 Dashboard today, with two main features being added.

Starting today and over the next two weeks, Xbox 360 users will be greeted by an update notification when they power their on their Xbox. Microsoft say the update will be rolled out in six phases to ensure a smooth update process with no problems or downtime.

International Paypal support is the first update, giving gamers in more countries the chance to pay for content, LIVE subscriptions and Microsoft points using Paypal. Unfortunately Paypal for Xbox won’t be available in Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Czech Republic, Finland, Greece, Hungary, India, Japan, Russia, South Africa, South Korea and Taiwan.

Microsoft will also be adding a new Auto-Standby feature to prevent consoles accidentally being left on. If your console is idle for more than one hour, the feature will kick in and shut the console down into standby mode to reduce power consumption and prevent overheating. The setting will become available within the System Settings menu.

A new feature which was expected to be a part of this Dashboard update is Avatar Kinect, a feature which Microsoft demoed at CES earlier this year. Unfortunately it won’t be coming in this update, but it is widely expected to be released as another update on May 27th.
