Microsoft Zune MP4 players killed off in favour of Windows Phone 7.5

  • by

After years of what can be described generously as ‘cult success’ and perhaps more accurately as ‘poor sales’ in the US, microsoft’s Zune player devices are no more. The company has revealed that it no longer plans to make the devices, and wil instead focus its musical attentions on Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 7.5.

“We recently announced that, going forward, Windows Phone will be the focus of our mobile music and video strategy, and that we will no longer be producing Zune players,” said Microsoft on the Zune website.

“So what does this mean for our current Zune users? Absolutely nothing,” it continues. “Your device will continue to work with Zune services just as it does today. And we will continue to honor the warranties of all devices for both current owners and those who buy our very last devices. Customer service has been, and will remain a top priority for us.”

In effect, this means that ‘Zune’ will still be the name given to MS’ music software, which will run on Windows Phone handsets. The software will live and the iPod-rivalling Zune players will be no more. No… don’t cry. They were never on sale in the UK anyway. Let us know your thoughts on our comments below or via our @Gadget_Helpline Twitter page or Official Facebook group.
