Motorola has launched a new smartphone aimed directly at those on a budget; the Moto G.
After launching the all-singing, all-dancing Moto X smartphone earlier in the year, the company has now doubled its new-look ‘Moto’ phone portfolio with a more affordable model created in the same vein.
At £135 or $179 to buy outright SIM-free, the Moto G is already going to be an extremely attractive option for smartphone buyers on pay as you go, but it’s also got a decent list of specifications and features that make the price tag even more appealing.
Sporting a 4.5-inch 720p HD display, 5 megapixel rear camera, 1.3 megapixel front facing camera and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean ready to go out of the box. Being owned by Google also brings benefits, as the Moto G will be getting the coveted Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade in the near future as well.
In terms of looks, the Moto G is very much like its much more expensive sibling, the Moto X. It’s set to launch in a range of bright colours and sports a curved plastic back and dimpled Motorola logo just below the rear camera.
In terms of power, the Moto G has a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chip clocked at 1.2GHz and 1GB of RAM, compared to the Moto X’s faster 1.7GHz dual-core processor and 2GB of RAM. Like the X, the Moto G doesn’t have a micro SD card slot for expansion and comes in 8GB and 16GB versions.
We were a little disappointed to learn that the Moto X wouldn’t be coming to the UK – or any countries outside of the US, for that matter – but Motorola has come through with its promise of other, similar new phones for the rest of the world. At £135 for the 8GB model and £159 for the 16GB, the Moto G is a very affordable phone that maintains a good spec and a pretty cool design.
The Moto G will be available from networks and various retailers in the UK towards the end of November.
