Mozilla reveals first official Firefox phone for developers only

  • by

Mozilla has revealed the first smartphone to run its Firefox operating system, although unfortunately you won’t be able to buy the eye-straining bright orange phone as it’s a test model for developers.

We knew that the software company, most famed for its Firefox web browser, was creating a new and unique smartphone OS. The full launch is edging closer, and in an attempt to garner apps and support from developers for the platform, the company has revealed the phone you see above, along with one other.

The phones aren’t yet available for developers but apparently will be in the very near future. They’re not mind-blowingly powerful either, but contain enough power and capability to allow devs to play with the software and see what they can come up with. Both phones feature a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 chip with 512MB of RAM, a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 display, 4GB of inbuilt storage and a 3-megapixel camera.

Both models come with the option to expand storage via a micro SD card slot, so we’re hoping that the Firefox OS will have the option to run apps from swappable memory cards, like Android.

“Developer preview phones will help make the mobile web more accessible to more people,” says Mozilla.

“Hundreds of millions of people worldwide use Firefox to discover, experience and connect to the Web. A web based on open standards and open technologies. We couldn’t have done this without web developers.

“Now we are working on bringing the power of the web to mobile, through Firefox OS, along with all the power of open standards and an open community, and once again, we’d like to invite web developers to join us.”
