Apple’s newly launched iPad has beaten all previous iPad sales records, and has even been a record breaker for network partner AT&T in the U.S.
The news was unveiled during a conference call with CEO Tim Cook, who revealed the company had a “best-ever” first weekend as iPad fans queued for hours to get the new tablet.
“Customers are loving the incredible new features of iPad, including the stunning Retina display, and we can’t wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world this Friday.” Cook said.
Cook didn’t go into details about exact figures during the conference call, but it’s thought that the iPad sold somewhere near 3 million units.
Phil Schiller, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, then released a statement after the conference call confirming the number of units sold.
“The new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold – the strongest iPad launch yet.” Schiller declared.
Meanwhile, U.S network AT&T is also pleased with the performance of the new iPad, quoting record single-day sales and activations.
In a brief press release, the carrier said: “On Friday, March 16, AT&T set a new single-day record for its iPad sales and activations, demonstrating robust demand for the new iPad on the nation’s largest 4G network, covering nearly 250 million people.”
Like Apple, the company didn’t publish sales figures or say exactly how many of those activations came with 4G LTE contracts compared to 3G users.
It’s not all good news for Apple as we’ve reported a possible overheating issue with the new iPad. Meantime, Apple investors — who will receive their first dividends since 1995 later this year— can rest assured the latest product from the world’s largest gadget maker is unquestionably hot sales-wise.
