NFC payment tech coming to Windows Phone next year

  • by

Want to know where Microsoft will be taking the Windows Phone platform in the next couple of years? Nowhere dangerous, apparently. Andy Lees, Head of Windows Phone has been interviewed describing the operating system’s future plans in relation to the competition, with NFC payment technology being the boldest step.

“Microsoft is providing technological building blocks so payments can be done on the phone – we aren’t competing with other people providing services. We’ll have a platform approach,” said Lees, suggesting that 2012 Windows Phone handsets will work with whichever payment infrastructures prove to be the most popular.

So far, so safe. When pushed on the subject of mobile innovation, Lees turned to Apple’s Siri, calling it something that users won’t necessarily be cool with using in public, which – in his view – limits its use to just within cars. With Nokia’s WP handsets about to ship, it seems that Microsoft is happy to ride along at its current pace, rather than to shake up the field. Maybe something big will come when Windows 8 is released for PCs and tablets next year? Let us know your thoughts on our comments below or via our @Gadget_Helpline Twitter page or Official Facebook group.
