Nokia’s shining knight, the N9, is possibly the most sought after Nokia handset in years – not so much because of the handset’s specs but more because we want to see if Nokia can raise themselves from their ever-crumbling empire and soar again.
With this enthusiasm for the N9 comes a lot of speculation as to when it will be released to the general public – an official release date is yet to be announced. There have been a few rumoured release dates banded around but now mobile network Orange’s Swiss website has come out and stated a launch date of the 15th of September in Switzerland.
This news comes after rumours of a mid-August launch from a Russian site and with the vague “coming soon tag” on all of UK-based websites.
The reason everyone is excited about the N9 is because it is the first (and possibly last) of Nokia’s homebrew operating system entitled MeeGo, which last year was hyped as the saviour of Nokia and the thing to replace Symbian OS as the primary choice of software for Nokia smartphones.
However, since the platform’s inception things have taken a swerve, with Nokia not releasing the MeeGo OS fast enough and still producing a large amount of Symbian handsets (to little Sales or Success) and evidently getting into bend with Microsoft and its Windows Phone 7 OS.
The Nokia N9 is a Linux-based MeeGo OS smartphone and sports a multi-touch 3.9” AMOLED display, ARM Cortex-A8 1GHz processor as well as front-facing VGA camera and 8MP rear shooter with 720p HD video recording capability, Bluetooth and NFC connectivity (Near Field Communications).
As per usual there is no official word on a UK release date but we are hoping for a third Quarter release of the handset – preferably September 15th!
