OUYA Console to Get XBMC Media Centre Functionality

The Android 4.0 powered OUYA micro games console will play nicely with the popular XBMC Android media centre and media streaming app come its launch in 2013.

OUYA has gone from strength to strength since obliterating its funding target on Kickstarter earlier in the year, with the most recent addition being the OnLive cloud gaming service. Now it has the backing of the team at XBMC, an established and impressive app that caters for media playback and streaming from other devices.

In a blog post by XBMC, the app makers expressed their love of the micro console while proudly announcing that their app works well with it;

“Maybe it’s because many of Team Ouya support XBMC, and nearly a third of Team XBMC members are Ouya backers.

Regardless, we are delighted to announce that XBMC will be working with Ouya to ensure that XBMC works well on the Ouya platform.”

For those who aren’t aware, XBMC is a neat and customisable media centre for Android devices – primarily smartphones and tablets. Putting it on the OUYA means that it can become much more than a games console, adding on the ability to play music and videos locally as well as stream them from another device using DLNA.

To date the OUYA console has raised over $6.8 million in funding, which goes to show just how popular it is. When it eventually goes on sale early next year, users will be able to run Android games as well as streaming some of the big name console games via the OnLive cloud gaming service. Now users will have media playback capabilities as well, thanks to XBMC.
