Pictures of the Google/Asus Nexus 7 MK2 leak, reveal new design

The sequel to what has become one of the most popular tablet devices to date looks to have been uncovered in full. We’re talking about the Nexus 7 MK2 from Google and Asus.

Very official-looking front and back images of the device were revealed by the illustrious @evleaks on Twitter over the weekend, allowing us to join up the dots with some recently revealed specifications for said gadget.

The new model clearly sports a rear camera – one of the most missed features in the original – which according to the recently revealed specifications sheet is a 5 megapixel sensor. Although you can’t see it in the image, there’s also a 1.2 megapixel front facing camera for those Hangouts and Skype calls.

Not much can really be garnered from the leaked images as the design is still minimal and simple, but it’s nice to see what Google and Asus have done in this department. The dimpled effect on the back from the original has been ditched and replaced with a matte finish and a rather smooth-looking material, whilst the front is still glossy black.

The new Nexus 7 will sport dual cameras as mentioned, a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 32GB of internal storage, wireless charging and HDMI out via a micro USB slim port, along with a new version of Android in the form of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

The Twitter leakster refers to the tablet as the Google Nexus 7 by Asus, 2013, although we still don’t really know the device’s real name. Will Google label the device as a proper sequel, a la Apple, or will it quietly replace the original model with an upgraded one and continue selling the Nexus 7 as normal? Rumours suggest a launch date of July 31st through the Play Store and other retailers, but we’ll find out for sure on July 24th at Google’s event.
