We may see Sony’s PlayStation 4 in the flesh for the very first time in just thirteen days, hopefully putting to bed any more renders like the one above. With less than two weeks until Sony’s PlayStation event, a Japanese publication has revealed that the console will cost over $400.
According to The Asahi Shimbun, a Japanese newspaper, the console will cost over 40,000 Yen – $428 in the US or around £400 in the UK – when it eventually does launch, which is likely to be closer to Christmas.
Whilst a converted price tag of around $430 would sound great when converted again to UK/EU currencies, it’s likely that the console will carry a very similar price tag in all countries.
When the original PlayStation 3 launched back in 2006 it was priced at a whopping $599, which put many off becoming early adopters. The price of the console inevitably dropped, with prices today between $2-$300 and sub-£200 here in the UK.
Interestingly, The Asahi also notes that the PS4’s controller will feature touch operation – something we’ve heard about a few times before. Previously leaked controller designs point to Sony adding a touchpad to the back of the controller, offering more depth to games in a way that its handheld console, the PS Vita, currently does.
Sony is expected to reveal details of the PlayStation 4 for the first time officially at an event on February 20th. Whilst we have high hopes of seeing the console and hearing a length specification sheet, we may have to wait until E3 in June for the full lowdown.
