With the acquisition of “certain assets” from GestureTek, chip-maker Qualcomm are looking to wave goodbye to the “old fashioned” touchscreen on our smartphones and tablets.
The future is all about “natural human gestures” they believe and the plan is to introduce their new purchase of gesture recognition technology into the next generation of Snapdragon processors as found in mobile handsets such as recent HTC models EVO 3D, Desire HD and Flyer Tablet.
Operating for over 25 years, in 1986 GestureTek were developers of a camera-enabled video tracking software system that mirrors hand and body movement into computer control methods and have created an ‘applied computer vision’ for computer-human interaction for a range of uses from retail to museums and the healthcare service. The company hold a number of patents with worldwide offices in the US, Canada and Asia.
“Our acquisition of key technology and assets from GestureTek will strengthen Qualcomm’s smartphone product portfolio and enable our customers to launch products with new and compelling user experiences.” says Qualcomm.
