Say hello to the latest member of the ever-expanding Galaxy smartphone family from Samsung. The new Galaxy Pocket is a dinky Android smartphone that will please your wallet.
The Pocket falls into the same area as the recently announced Galaxy Mini 2, although it’s even smaller. It has a 2.8-inch touchscreen that will display the stylish interface of Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) with Samsung’s TouchWiz interface nicely.
It has a capable 832MHz processor to power your games and video playback, and 3GB of internal storage, which can be expanded using a microSD card by up to 32GB more. Wi-Fi and 3.6Mbps HSDPA mobile connectivity will get you online for browsing, emails, apps and more, while Bluetooth will hook you up to other phones, carkits and hands-free devices with ease.
With a name like Galaxy Pocket, we expected the emphasis to be on ‘pocketability’. Obviously that’s not a real word, but we wish it was, such is it’s applicability to mobile phones. Fortunately, the Galaxy Pocket is very ‘pocketable’, measuring a diminutive 103.7 x 57.5 x 12mm and weighing just 97g.
With Android 2.3 you’ll get access to Google Mail, Maps and the Android Market, and Samsung has added a bunch of its own apps including the popular cross-platform messaging app ChatON, which will let you message your iPhone, Android and BlackBerry-toting buddies for free.
Simon Stanford, Vice President, UK and IRE Telecommunications and Networks Division spoke of the new product: “This new device adds further breadth to the choice of smartphones we currently offer and provides a smartphone experience for even more customers at an affordable price“.
Unfortunately Samsung hasn’t confirmed when you’ll be able to pocket its latest Galaxy smartphone, neither has it hung a price tag on it. We think it’ll fall just under the £100 margin, making it a great option for those on pay as you go.
