Samsung Announces Exynos 5 Processor, Welcomes Next Gen Devices

  • by

Samsung has just revealed its latest and most powerful system on a chip (SoC) for smart devices. “A chip? That’s not exciting!” We hear you say. Well, it is when you see that it shows what Samsung’s next generation of smartphones and tablets will be capable of.

The new Exynos 5250 features a blazing fast dual-core processor running at 1.7GHz, paired with the very latest in graphics technology for mobile devices; the Mali T604. The processor itself is an ARM Cortex A15 affair, with support for the latest technologies and future ones too. Wi-Fi display is supported, as is USB 3.0 connectivity.

Our smartphones and tablets are fast gaining incredible power, and this chip signals the next generation of even more impressive devices. The chip supports faster memory – 12.8GB/s bandwidth and support for 2 port 800MHz LPDDR3 RAM – which will lead to faster downloads, faster file saving and faster access to your device’s memory in general.

Thanks to the Mali T604 graphics chip we’ll also be enjoying even better HD video and gaming. This chip has support for screen resolutions up to a whopping 2560 x 1600, which could signal a new generation of tablet devices from Samsung to rival the Retina Display iPad. Coupled with the processor this chip will also give device’s the ability to play Full HD 1080p video at 60fps, which is double the frames per second that today’s devices achieve as standard.

3D phones could also be on the cards from Samsung, as the Mali chip can support stereoscopic 3D along with OpenGL ES 3.0 and DirectX 11 support for impressive gameplay. Samsung hasn’t been a player in the 3D smartphone market yet, and we suspect 3D support in this chip is aimed at other manufacturers who may want to use it in their devices.

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy Note II later this month, and it could very well be packing this new chip. Unless Samsung comes out with something better between now and the start of next year, the Galaxy S4 could well also use it. To put things into perspective, Samsung claims the new chip can provide 5x the performance of previous Mali graphics chips. Check out the video below for proof.
