While it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the very latest top-notch smartphones, we can’t forget the excellent budget and mid-range handsets that companies like Samsung and HTC have been producing of late. Samsung looks set to unleash one such phone at the end of this month during the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona.
Pictures and information on a successor to the baby of the Galaxy family – the Galaxy Mini – have appeared online ahead of schedule, and it looks like the design team at Samsung have given the little device a bit of a shake-up. The leaked image shows a bright orange back – a stark contrast from the blacks and greys of the original – perhaps Samsung will create a range of different coloured backs, much like the Nokia Lumia 710.
This colourful handset will improve upon its predecessor in the speed and screen departments mainly, with a faster 800MHz processor and the latest Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) software onboard to ensure a nippy user experience. The screen will be 3.3-inches in size with a HVGA resolution of 480×320 pixels, and of course, touch-responsive.
The Galaxy Mini 2 will be a diminutive and very pocketable smartphone; though don’t expect the works when it comes to the imaging department. The rear camera is 3-Megapixels without the LED flash for shooting in low light, and there isn’t a front-facing video camera either.
There’s a tidy 3GB of internal memory for storing your tunes, photos, videos and apps, and 3G HSDPA connectivity which runs to 7.2 megabytes per second, which should make for relatively speedy browsing.
A promo image of the phone along with the key specifications was sent to GSMarena, who have been told by their tipster that the phone will land in February. This is likely to indicate an official unveiling at the Mobile World Congress at the end of the month, with the phone then going almost immediately on sale. Of course, the Galaxy Mini 2 – aka S6500 – might not make the show, instead going straight on sale. It’s going to be pay as you go friendly, almost certainly keeping within the £200 price bracket. Stay tuned for the latest on this one.
