The Samsung Galaxy S5 will go on sale in just three weeks’ time, a Samsung executive has declared, putting the hotly anticipated new flagship Android phone in position for a mid-March launch.
The exec spoke recently with GSMArena, confirming the imminent arrival of the phone but not providing a precise date. It’s likely that Samsung will launch its new phone in more countries than ever on day one, although it’s also expected that multiple launch dates will be arranged to suit different countries.
We’re expecting to see the Samsung Galaxy S5 unveiled for the first time at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 24th. Samsung has already sent out the invitations for another of its trademark ‘Unpacked’ events – this time Unpacked 5, hinting at the fifth generation of its Galaxy S flagship range.
With an unveiling taking place on the 24th of this month there will be 2-3 weeks before the phone becomes available to buy, going by GSMArena’s sources. The Galaxy S4 was announced on March 14th and launched late April, so if the source’s information is correct then Samsung is looking to shorten the timeframe between announcement and availability.
The Galaxy S5 is expected to come running Android 4.4 KitKat and will sport one of the newest Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipsets, 3GB of RAM and an upgraded rear camera of either 16 or 21 megapixels, depending on the rumour you read. Samsung will of course be upgrading its own TouchWiz user interface to complement the upgrade to Android Jelly Bean, with a tiled homescreen feature similar to HTC’s BlinkFeed already revealed.
