With the release of the Apple iPad 2 with front-facing video camera, we expected VoIP software kings Skype to release an app for it almost immediately. Several months down the line, and we’ve just got confirmation that the app is almost ready.
Skype themselves reportedly uploaded a video entitled ‘Skype for iPad’, which shows the app in action. The video was then taken down shortly after, but not before several quick hands recorded the video and uploaded it to YouTube. We’re presuming somebody at Skype was too quick in uploading the video and was then told to take it down ASAP!
The video itself demonstrates scrolling through contacts, starting a video call and expanding the video feed to full screen. Interestingly, at the bottom of the video there is a disclaimer that reads “Actual video and audio call quality may vary based on the speed and quality of your Wi-Fi or 3G connection”. We’re assuming this means 3G Skype calling will be supported on the iPad 2, but approval will have to be made by each UK network first.
The interface looks simple yet easy to use, and we can see the familiar Skype features such as Camera Swap, Full Screen Video and Integrated Instant Messaging. It all looks very easy and smooth, but we’ll have to wait for the official release to see just what it will be like.
TUAW have since spoken to Skype’s VP of Consumer and Product Design, Rick Osterloh. Though he didn’t confirm a date for the app’s release, he did confirm that the app was in the testing stages, and should be approved for the Apple App Store “soon”.
