Chrono Trigger is one of my all time favourite role playing games; it was a classic on the SNES and it is a game that I play using an emulator on my SGS2.
Square Enix has just announced that their SNES classic RPG Chrono Trigger is finally, at long last, coming to iOS.
Before all the jailbreakers chime in with the old “We’ve had Chrono Trigger on our iPhones forever!”, this is no emulation. While it keeps all of the same graphic art and visual styling of the original, Square Enix has retooled the game’s interface specifically for touch and overhauled things like the text display system for the iPhone’s smaller screen.
Square keeps deliberately mentioning that it’s coming to iPhone — which means that while you’ll be able to run it on your iPad, it’ll almost certainly have to be in the visually-damning 2X scaling mode.
As any geek who lived through the 90s would almost certainly argue, Chrono Trigger is the definitive RPG of the 16-bit era. It’s arguable whether it’s the best, and it, like anything else, has its haters — but it’s impossible to say that it’s not the most universally loved.
RPGs have always had a massive fan base, and Chrono Trigger is one of the picks of the bunch. It is an epic game, and aside from Final Fantasy 7 it is my favourite RPG of all time. If you have an iPhone, or iPad for that matter, once the game is available get your hands on it and have a go, and if you are not glued to it for the next week constantly, I’ll eat my hat.
