The 1991 SEGA classic Sonic the Hedgehog will be entered into the World Video Game Hall of Fame which celebrates its second year in June.
Last year saw the World Video Game Hall of Fame induct some great titles including Super Mario Bros. and naturally Nintendo’s overall-sporting plumber would be joined by his platform dashing rival Sonic at some point. The popular duo led their respective brands in the console wars of the early nineties before anybody had ever heard of a PlayStation or Xbox – the brands which would become the market leaders of present day gaming. Also See: Super Mario Bros is First Entry to Video Game Hall of Fame
Like Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog helped pave the way for many platform games to follow and a number of other influential titles are set to join the iconic Mega Drive / Genesis game in a New York based event hosted by the Strong National Museum of Play.
Others in the World Video Game Hall of Fame Class of 2016 include The Legend of Zelda, the much beloved and cult fantasy game which set adventurer Link out on his first journey on Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986. The ‘Zelda’ franchise has spanned the decades and is still as popular as ever with Nintendo fans.Joining them is Grand Theft Auto III, the exciting drive/crime sequel which when released in 2001 changed the GTA play format from the classic bird’s eye view to the third-person, open-world experience which considerably expanded the gameplay that continues in the current games on Xbox One and PS4.
Also in the line-up is real-life replacer The Sims (2000), legendary arcade shooter Space Invaders (1978) and taking it way back is The Oregon Trail (1971) a historically educational game from the United States which has quietly spanned the ages most recently resurfacing on Nintendo 3DS and mobile.
