Sony Adds Ice Cream Sandwich to the Walkman With the New F800

A new Ice Cream Sandwich-based device has landed from Sony, but it’s not a smartphone or a tablet. It’s a media player to rival the iPod Touch, called the F800 Walkman.

Like Apple’s iPod, the Sony F800 Walkman is a music and media player with access to the web and apps. As it’s using the official Android 4.0 software, the Play Store is pre-installed for access to the same apps, eBooks and movies that you can get on your smartphone.

Three sizes will be available: 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB, but unlike other Android media players, there is no micro SD card slot for expanding upon what you get inside. It has a 3.5-inch touchscreen which looks very bright and sharp, and Wi-Fi connectivity for getting online to download apps and browse the web.

At its core the F800 is a music and media player though, and Sony has made sure that this area has been made to be the best it can be. Sony’s own S-Master MX Digital Amplifier and Clear Audio technologies provide crystal clear listening with thumping bass through the supplied in-ear headphones, or if you want to annoy everybody around you there’s an inbuilt xLOUD external speaker.

Music, Video and Photo content can be transferred to your device via PC or Mac, or downloads can be made directly to the device via a Wi-Fi connection using Sony’s Music Unlimited, and presumably their Video Unlimited service will be on there too for movies and TV shows.

Sony hasn’t announced a price or release date for the F800 Walkman just yet, but it should launch over the summer period.
